Continuing its active role within the Technical Working Group 2 of the South East Asia National Human Rights Institutions Forum (TWG 2 SEANF), Komnas HAM, in collaboration with the OHCHR Regional Office for South-East Asia, organized a Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) Training on 24 July 2025. The training gathered SEANF member delegates as well as representatives from various bureaus and heads of Komnas HAM’s Provincial Secretariats across six provinces in Indonesia.
Held in a hybrid format, the training explored several key themes, including Supporting HRD through the UN Declaration on HRDs, human rights mechanisms, the role of NHRIs and environmental human rights defenders, business and human rights, and supporting HRDs in the context of conflicts.

Through this program, participants strengthened their conceptual understanding of HRDs and their unique vulnerabilities, while deepening their appreciation of the vital role that NHRIs play in advancing HRD protection at both the international and regional levels.

The training also featured distinguished speakers, including Cecilia Jimenez-Damary, former UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons; Romchat Wachirarattanakornkul and Arnaud Chaltin, Human Rights Officers from OHCHR; and Pichamon Yeophantong, Member of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights.
This successful training underscores Komnas HAM’s resolute commitment to strengthening the capacity of those on the frontline of human rights defense and promoting impactful regional cooperation across Southeast Asia. (SNF)
